Recent ARAS News and Event Highlights

The Association of Retired Attorneys of Sarasota (ARAS) continues its tradition of hosting engaging and thought-provoking speakers at its monthly meetings, providing members with opportunities to stay informed about current legal issues, explore diverse perspectives, and connect with fellow legal professionals. Here's a glimpse into some of the recent highlights: 

Environmental Law and Advocacy

In May 2022, Justin Bloom, founder of Suncoast Waterkeeper, captivated the audience with his presentation on "The Impact and Significance to Us of the Piney Point Pollution Issues." Bloom, a seasoned environmental attorney, delved into the complexities of water pollution, focusing on the Piney Point phosphate plant's environmental impact and the ongoing efforts to protect Florida's precious water resources. 

Access to Justice and Pro Bono Service

Pamela Fields, Esq., Pro Bono Coordinator of Legal Aid of Manasota, Inc., addressed the June 2022 meeting, shedding light on the vital role of pro bono legal services in ensuring access to justice for all. Her presentation, "Legal Aid of Manasota: What We Do and How You Can Become a Vital Part of Our Team," inspired ARAS members to consider how their legal expertise could make a difference in the lives of those in need.    

National Security and the Balance of Power

George Peirce, a seasoned legal professional with extensive experience in national security and foreign policy, delivered a compelling presentation in September 2022 on "The Powers of War and Peace: The President, Congress, and the Courts." Peirce's insights into the delicate balance of power among the branches of government, particularly in matters of national security, provided a fascinating perspective on the intersection of law and geopolitics. 

The Inner Workings of the Local Judicial System:

The Honorable Erika Quartermain, County Court Judge for Sarasota County, provided a unique glimpse into the local judicial system in October 2022. Her presentation, "The Sarasota County Judicial System and the progress that has been achieved in specific areas of the law," offered valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of administering justice at the local level. 

Civility in the Legal Profession

In April 2023, ARAS hosted a timely and relevant discussion on "Civility in a Civil Profession." The speakers explored the evolving dynamics of the legal profession, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism, ethical conduct, and respectful interactions, even in the face of adversarial proceedings. 

Voting Rights

A Historical and Contemporary Perspective: March 2023 saw a dynamic doubleheader presentation on voting rights, featuring Michael Margulies and Tom Shults. Their talk, "A Double Header on Voting Rights," provided a comprehensive overview of the history and evolution of voting rights in the United States, with a particular focus on Florida's unique legal and political landscape. 

The Future of Sarasota

In May 2023, Cassie Selden offered a captivating presentation on "What Sarasota Will Be Debating in the Coming Year." Selden's insights into the key issues and challenges facing the Sarasota community provided ARAS members with a valuable understanding of the local context in which they live and serve.  

Healthcare in Sarasota

David Verinder, President and CEO for Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, addressed the September 2023 meeting, providing an overview of the healthcare landscape in Sarasota County. His presentation focused on the challenges and opportunities associated with providing quality healthcare to a growing and diverse population. 

The Planned Amendment Reform System

In December 2023, ARAS hosted a presentation on the "Planned Amendment Reform System," exploring proposed changes to the process of amending the Florida Constitution. This timely discussion provided members with an opportunity to engage with a significant legal and political issue facing the state. 

"War Stories: Tales from the Legal Trenches"

The June 2023 meeting featured a unique "War Stories" program, where ARAS members shared captivating anecdotes and insights from their long and distinguished legal careers. This engaging session provided a glimpse into the diverse experiences and perspectives of the ARAS membership.
